How to achieve Outstanding Spike and Electrical Noise protection: The very best power protection comes from a special type of transformer known as a Constant Voltage Transformer (CVT). Providing unparalleled reliability and conditioning performance, spikes and electrical noise are neutralised with attenuation as high as 75dB. In addition the input and output transformer windings are physically separated. Known as Galvanic isolation this separation ensures that there is no direct connection between the mains supply and load. A CVT therefore provides an impenetrable barrier to spikes and high frequency electrical noise. This barrier also works in reverse mode to prevent a 'noisy' load from polluting the mains supply itself. Click here to review the CVT product homepage Superior sag surge and brownout protection: Mains voltage sags and surges are automatically corrected by a CVT. When faced with an extreme surge voltage such as a local lightning strike the power conditioner will present a low impedance to the mains to protect both itself and any connected loads. Automatic sine-wave generation: Perfect switched-mode-power-supply (SMPS) driver: Ferro resonant transformer technology provides waveform shoulder-lifting - the CVT is the kindest way to drive a switched mode power supply. Input surges are reduced prolonging life and conduction times are lengthened. In addition the CVT provides harmonic buffering and improved reservoir capacitor hold up for the inevitable supply micro breaks which occur with grid protection switching. CVT how does it work? AC stabilisation can be achieved using a simple magnetic device which has no moving parts. This is a process of producing a constant ac voltage from a varying ac voltage supply and involves the use of saturable reactors. The latter may be incorporated in a special transformer magnetic saturation being produced in a part of the magnetic circuit. The winding arrangement and construction of one such constant voltage transformer is shown in the diagram:
The core is a three-limbed shell with a magnetic leakage path dividing the winding space. On the upper winding space is the primary and a Thus once the secondary is brought to resonance the output voltage from the secondary and compensating windings is The compensating winding produces a small voltage which is used to 'buck' the output voltage. To produce a sinusoidal waveform a further winding is added which is coupled via a magnetic gap. This extra 'neutralising' winding can be arranged to provide a suitable amount of 3rd and 5th harmonics which when summed with the output 'square' wave above results in a sinewave. After talking to a customer in Sengal, West Africa today (7/01/2012), we thought we would post the following to help all our customers calculate their load and battery solution correctly when considering Power Inverter applications: Selecting a battery or system of batteries that will provide your Inverter/Charger with proper DC voltage and an adequate amp-hour capacity to power your application is straight forward. Even though Tripp Lite Inverter/Chargers are highly-efficient at DC-to-AC inversion, their rated output capacities are limited by the total amp-hour capacity of connected batteries and the support of your vehicle’s alternator if the engine is kept running. • STEP 1: Determine Total Wattage Required Note: Your Inverter/Charger will operate at higher efficiencies at about 75% - 80% of nameplate rating. • STEP 2: Determine DC Battery Amps Required 540 watts ÷ 12V = 45 DC Amps • STEP 3: Estimate Battery Amp-Hours Required (for operation unsupported by the alternator) 45 DC Amps × 5 Hrs. Runtime NOTE! Battery amp-hour ratings are usually given for a 20-hour discharge rate. Actual amp-hour capacities are less when batteries are discharged at faster rates. For example, batteries discharged in 55 minutes provide only 50% of their listed amp-hour ratings, while batteries discharged in 9 minutes provide as little as 30% of their amp-hour ratings. • STEP 4: Estimate Battery Recharge Required, Given Your Application 270 Amp-Hours ÷ 55 Amps NOTE! For Tripp Lite Inverter/Chargers providing 1250 watts or less of continuous AC power, a full-size battery will normally allow sufficient power for many applications before recharging is necessary. For mobile applications, if a single battery is continuously fed by an alternator at high idle or faster, then recharging from utility or generator power may not be necessary. For Tripp Lite Inverter/Chargers over 1250 watts used in mobile applications, Tripp Lite recommends you use at least two batteries, if possible fed by a heavy-duty alternator anytime the vehicle is running. Tripp Lite Inverter/Chargers will provide adequate power for ordinary usage within limited times without the assistance of utility or generator power. However, when operating extremely heavy electrical loads at their peak in the absence of utility power, you may wish to “assist your batteries” by running an auxiliary generator or vehicle engine, and doing so at faster than normal idling.

Everyday questions from IT Managers:
Well Critical Power Supplies has the answers in the form of the Eaton 16amp STS and the Riello MultiSwitch MNS 1. Eaton STS 16 IEC - 1U High The Eaton STS 16amp IEC is an affordable solution for customers willing to add power redundancy to high voltage networking equipment like switches and routers. This source transfer switch will power them from 2 different sources (typically the mains power and a UPS, or 2 UPSs). Should one power source fail, the alternate one will switch over with no interruption to the connected equipment. Eaton STS can be connected to multiple devices at the same time while saving the cost of expensive redundant power supplies.
2. Riello Multiswitch - Two Versions SNMP and RS232 Communication Options MultiSwitch STS provides electrical distribution and remote management for up to eight network users, powered from either one or two direct mains supplies or UPS or a combination of both. MultiSwitch STS can connect each user (up to eight, each with a maximum power demand not greater than 3A), to either of the two power sources (A and B). Load demand is shown on the LCD. The Riello MultiSwitch-S Plus STS Source Transfer Switch is a serial communications enabled version of the standard Riello MultiSwitch. MultiSwitch STS provides electrical distribution and remote management for up to eight network users, powered from either one or two direct mains supplies or UPS or a combination of both. Device protectionDamage to electronics very often results from overloading or electro-static power surges. These are in fact far and away the most common source of such damage, more common than user error or negligence.Overload refers to any current that briefly rises above the threshold value of the network's current. Overloads are not just a problem in the 230 V network, but also for devices connected to telephone and antenna wiring. Overloading first attacks sensitive system components. The tiny, electronic circuits on chips, motherboards, network cards, etc cannot cope with additional power or current surges. Unless effectively protected, overloading destroy the sensitive electronic elements in the circuits of connected devices. Overloads can originated from things like switching pulses from strong motors, welding devices, or other large electric devices. Even more dangerous are the very high voltage surges set off by indirect lightning strikes. These spell certain doom for unprotected electric devices. High intensity current surges can also make their way into the power mains through indirect lighting strikes or can travel over telephone or antenna wiring into computers, video, home theatre or hifi devices, destroying any device without proper protection. Protection from overvoltages and electro-magnetic current peaks is achieved by using device protection products between the power source (plug) and the device. Protective elements like voltage dependent resistors and gas diverters are important elements that arrange for dangerous overvoltages to be diverted into the ground in fractions of a second, hence preventing the destructive high voltages from reaching the protected devices Product Focus "Secure-Tec Surge Protection 15.000 A" With acoustic warning when surge protection fails.Purchase online at Critical Power Supplies Ltd E-Store Features and Benefits.
